We offer an alcohol and other drug education and motivation (AODEM) programme for rangatahi staying at Oranga Tamariki’s Korowai Manaaki Youth Justice Residence.

Young people participate in psychoeducational learning modules, which promote consequential thinking and help them to manage the harms they may be experiencing due to alcohol or other drug use.

Facilitated by two AOD trained practitioners, the programme includes group activities and discussions with rangatahi, as well as individual counselling support. If it is beneficial to the young person, we also support the process of referral and transfer to our youth residence in partnership with other Odyssey teams.

Our team consists of one male and one female practitioner of different cultural backgrounds, allowing us to offer rangatahi a choice of key worker for support.

Is this for me?

The Korowai Manaaki AODEM programme is offered to all rangatahi at the Korowai Manaaki Youth Justice residence. These young people range in age from 14 to 18 years old.

The process

While we offer support to all rangatahi admitted to Korowai Manaaki, it is still their decision whether they chose to engage.

Should rangatahi choose to participate, an Odyssey youth services practitioner will meet with them to perform a brief AOD assessment. This information is used to perform interventions in a group AOD psycho-educational setting or during individual counselling sessions.

What to expect

Upon admission into Korowai Manaaki, rangatahi will be given the option to complete a brief AOD assessment. Should they choose to engage with Odyssey, they will complete an assessment and begin working one-on-one with their key worker.

Additionally, rangatahi attend group AOD psycho-education modules run in their units as part of the in-house school schedule.

Knowledge gained from the learning modules is then revisited during individual counselling sessions to consider how rangatahi can progress toward their goals.

Let’s move forward together

If you are involved in the care or support of rangatahi living at Korowai Manaaki and you think they might benefit from alcohol and other drug education and counselling, please contact their Korowai Manaaki Case Leaders to discuss Odyssey’s involvement.

Together it’s possible
